Work progresses on new SEA LIFE Centre in Portugal
A new SEA LIFE centre and marine sanctuary is to open next summer in Portugal’s second largest city, Porto.
The project, which has started on site, is being developed by Merlin Entertainments Group and has been designed by architects Kay Elliott in association with local firm Balonus Projectos. It is due to be completed in June 2009.
The 7 million euro project comprises 2,100 sq m over two storeys. It will be home to multiple displays. Species will be accommodated from the Druro River in Spain across the Atlantic Ocean to tropical climes beyond.
The architecture befits such a prominent site, with a curved building incorporating LEDS set inside glass panels at ground level to ensure an active frontage day and night. The first floor, which is cantilevered, is clad in ceramic tiles.
Phil Webber, director at Kay Elliott, said: “This is an important project for Porto and is expected to be a catalyst for the regeneration of the city, attracting more visitors and providing new entertainment. We have been involved in many SEA LIFE centres and the reasonable cost of construction in Portugal has enabled us to create a striking building on the sea front.”
Sea water extraction will provide the water for the displays.
