Kay Elliott

Major Redevelopment of Ellacombe School

Kay Elliott has been appointed by Torbay Borough Council to work on the £2.75 million phased redevelopment of Ellacombe Primary School in Torquay.

In the first phase of the project, valued at £0.6 million, Kay Elliott will design a Foundation Unit for Ellacombe School, which is expected to take two full classes and a future single unit Nursery. The unit constitutes a large double height open plan teaching and learning area with direct connection to a green walled garden. A large mezzanine area above houses the Early Years Resource area and is directly connected to the adjoining Lower School Block (in Phase 2). The project is due to be completed by Easter 2010.

Mark Muir, Director of Kay Elliott, says: “Having drawn up a master plan for the school, we’re delighted to be delivering phase 1, which has been designed primarily as a behavioural management tool to assist the school improve educational outcome from point of entry. The remodelling of the site has been driven by our response to a reduction in planned admission (due to reduced demand for primary school places in the area) and a number of other challenges along the way, including knitting contemporary thought into a historically significant Torquay site and responding to the urban grain of a mixed-use perimeter block development.”

Mark Musty, head teacher at Ellacombe School, said: “We just can’t wait for the project to be completed. It’s very exciting for the School and will fundamentally improve our teaching experience.”

Kay Elliott won the project following its recent re-appointment to the South West Consultants Framework, which Torbay Council utilises to procure capital projects.
