2016 Civic Trust Commendation for Abbey Sands

The Abbey Sands development in Torquay, was commended at the 2016 Civic Trust Awards earlier this month in London. The awards ceremony, which is the longest standing architectural & built environment awards scheme in Europe, took place at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, and celebrates outstanding architecture, planning and design.

Abbey Sands was one of only six south-west regional winners among the 58 projects honoured on the night, which included buildings from the across the UK, USA, Canada, Spain, Italy and Belgium.

This is the 4th award the mixed-use waterfront project has received since its completion last year, which includes the LABC National finalist, Michelmores Property Awards Building of the Year and Best Mixed-Use Development at the International Property Awards. The design of project – which consists of restaurants, 5* holiday units and luxury private apartments – takes advantage of the sweep of Tor Bay and is inspired by the Art-Deco tradition of the British seaside; creating a contemporary interpretation of the 'Riviera' style.

The Civic Trust Awards recognise the very best in architecture, planning and landscape internationally so we are honoured to have received this commendation for the Abbey Sands development. What was previously an unloved part of Torbay is now bustling with life. We feel the building has made a really positive contribution to Torquay’s waterfront and celebrates what we love about the English Riviera.
