New African Savannah Zoo exhibit achieves planning

The recently approved proposal for a new 6.5 hectare African savannah exhibit draws inspiration from the landscapes of the Matobo Hills, a world heritage site in Zimbabwe with conservation links to the zoo.

Our brief was “To create a ‘Panorama of African animals’ that offers visitors opportunities to look out over an aesthetically pleasing scene of animals uncluttered by traditional fences” Boundaries between animals and the public are designed in such a way as to appear visually unobtrusive in order to amplify the immersive experience enjoyed by visitors to the zoo.

Individual structures are placed along a route through the rolling landscape, enhancing the immersive experience of visitors whilst opening up existing paddocks into a large interconnected mixed species exhibit.
