Palace Hotel

Client: Palace Hotel
Completion date: Outline Consent 2007

This 142 unit holiday apartment complex within the grounds of the Palace Hotel, was granted consent in 2007. It was designed to provide a perfect base for visitors to experience the region’s landscapes and cultural heritage.

Torbay Council and Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust applied for European Geopark Status. Kay Elliott wanted to make sure that the holiday and hotel apartment building designed would reflect this and encourage people to explore the coastline and geological sites nearby, including the internationally important Kents Cavern. A key ambition was to achieve better levels of accessibility for visitors and the community for the amenities and beach.

The hotel provides 142 holiday apartments with a mixture of one, two and three bedrooms. A stepped elevation delivers roof terraces for upper apartments and maximises views for all guests, whilst respecting the height of surrounding buildings.

The crescent form of the building follows the site’s existing topography. It results in a 70m wide opening for extensive landscaping including a retention pond for visual impact and surface water drainage.
