Tides Reach Hotel

Client: EHC Estates Limited
£12million construction budget, Salcombe

Tides Reach is a new build 51 bed luxury hotel and spa located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, overlooking the Salcombe Estuary in South Devon. The proposals include a restaurant, bar, pool, treatment suite and extensive public areas.

All rooms and public spaces are orientated towards the sea views and have either private balconies or meadow grass roof top terraces with private hot tubs.

The beach elevation is composed of curved horizontal bands of white render, which, in contrast with the glazed and shaded balconies in between, will serve to emphasize the horizontal form of the building whilst articulating the curved footprint.

The Spa facility comprises a pool with infinity edge, a reflection pool, 5 treatment rooms and stepping stones to the spa terrace. All public areas on the ground floor open onto their own dedicated terrace facing the estuary, with a further lower floating terrace accessible from the beach. The 100 cover restaurant also capitalises on the fantastic sea views and external terraces and features a private dining room.

The building’s form offers a contemporary take on coastal hotel architecture of the early 20th century, with notable reference to local examples such as the original Tides Reach Hotel and nearby Burgh Island.

The new hotel replaces an existing 35 bed hotel. The design mitigates the issues of flooding by accommodating extensive compensatory floodwater storage below ‘floating terraces.’ Extensive landscaping will include a water rill weaving past subtropical planting and through a reeded ‘rain garden’ with echoes of Slapton Ley and the nearby Overbecks National Trust gardens

The new hotel will form part of the Eden Hotel Collection, a group of luxury hotels with locations in the Midlands, Cotswolds and south-west.
