Tides Reach Hotel Salcombe

Situated in an enviable position at the mouth of the Salcombe estuary, our proposal for the new Tides Reach Hotel incorporates a comprehensive remodelling of the existing structure, new build facilities and waterfront residential accommodation.

Conceived principally as two interlocking pitched roof forms running perpendicular to the water’s edge, the design echoes the traditional boat building structures, sail lofts and boat houses seen along the estuary. This design approach takes advantage of the remarkable views across the estuary to East Portlemouth, whilst minimising the proposal’s visual impact.

The successful design, which secured permission in September 2016, addresses a number of challenging planning constraints including impact on an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the adjacent listed lifeboat station.

Salcombe’s boatbuilding heritage is referenced through a semi-industrial aesthetic of oversized openings and patent glazing detailed with clean, linear, architectural lines. Cedar and dark grey cladding complemented with concealed gutters ensures an uncluttered contemporary visual appearance.

The new destination hotel with its 44 bedrooms, restaurant, bar and spa facilities will be enhanced further by a significant landscaping proposal incorporating external dining terraces setting the hotel and its visitors around a unique natural pond.

In addition, 10 new luxury waterfront apartments will be created, within the original 1930s building, taking advantage of the sites unique location and the boutique hotel’s dining and spa facilities.
