Pub of the Year - (Cumbria Tourist Awards 2025)
The Brackenrigg Inn was transformed from a tired 1970's pub into a vibrant destination inn, blending characterful charm with contemporary design. Through adaptive reuse and locally sourced antiques, the project minimised environmental impact while creating a warm, eclectic interior that celebrates 'Lake Literature' and Cumbrian community.
As part of Another Place, The Lakes, Kay Elliott’s interiors team reimagined the inn to remain a traditional, authentic pub rooted in its landscape - offering warmth and comfort to both locals and visitors.
The design concept drew inspiration from the literature of the Lake District - from its flora and fauna to its maps, guides, and classic novels. Much like getting lost in a book, the interiors were imagined as a place of discovery, comfort, and resonance. A space where stories unfold - layered with history, enriched by design, and compelling enough to draw you back, time and again.

"At first sight, the revamped Brackenrigg Inn couldn't be more local. Outside, there are views straight onto Ullswater; inside, glasses foam with pints of Kirkstone Gold and the air crackles with Cumbrian accents."

The exterior was refreshed with a soft touch—a clean paint finish, plum front door, and green-framed windows adding character without losing heritage. Hand-painted signage and a new lighting scheme complete the look, giving the inn a warm, welcoming presence day and night.

Around 80% of the furniture was sourced from local antique shops and auctions, with additional bespoke pieces crafted by nearby makers. This approach not only reduced environmental impact but also fostered community connections, raised awareness of the inn’s revival, and gave the interiors a layered character rooted in place and story.
